Common Questions About Counseling What to Expect
FAQs
What is counseling?
Counseling offers a safe, confidential space to talk openly about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and make sense of what’s happening in your life with support from a trained professional who listens without judgment.
Who can benefit from counseling?
Counseling is for anyone who wants support or a better understanding of themselves. People come for many reasons such as anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship challenges, grief, or life transitions. You don’t have to be in crisis to reach out; many clients come simply to grow, build resilience, and live with more balance and clarity.
What happens in a session?
Each session is a conversation focused entirely on you. Together, we explore what’s going on, what you hope to change or understand, and ways to help you move forward. You set the pace, and there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to do counseling.
How long and how often are sessions?
Sessions typically last 60 minutes. Most clients begin with weekly sessions, though we can adjust the frequency based on your needs and availability. The overall length of counseling varies, some people find a few sessions helpful, while others choose longer term support.
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes. What you share in counseling stays private and is treated with care and professionalism. The only exceptions are rare situations involving serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or where disclosure is required by law. These limits are always discussed clearly at the start.
Do you offer online or in-person sessions?
Sessions are available online only.
